Novak Djokovic started his 413th week at No 1 in the ATP Rankings on Monday and he looks set to remain top for at least another month, but there were two big changes in the rest of the top 10.
Tennis great Djokovic was once again inactive last week as he is taking an extended break following the Australian Open, but his position at No 1 was solidified following Carlos Alcaraz’s shock defeat at the Argentina Open.
Carlos Alcaraz was expected to close the gap to the 24-time Grand Slam winner, but instead the points difference grew to 750 after the Spaniard was upset by Nicolas Jarry in the semi-final of the ATP 250 event.
World No 2 Alcaraz will get another opportunity to move closer to Djokovic as he will be in action at the Rio Open, but he has 300 points to defend after finishing runner-up in 2023. A title run will see Alcaraz reduce the deficit to 550, but Djokovic looks set to start the Sunshine Double at No 1.
The big change came at No 3 as Jannik Sinner rose to a career-high No 3 to become the highest-ranked Italian man in ATP Rankings history.
Sinner followed up his maiden Grand Slam title run at the Australian Open by going all the way at the Rotterdam Open to remain unbeaten in 12 matches in 2024. In fact, he has won 32 of the last 34 matches with Ben Shelton (Shanghai) and Djokovic (ATP Finals) the two players to beat him late last year.
The Italian has the smallest of margins over Medvedev as he is just five points ahead of the Russian, who will once again be absent from the ATP Tours this week as he has opted not to defend his Qatar Open title. It essentially means that Sinner’s lead over Medvedev will be bigger come next Monday.
The other major change sees Rotterdam finalist Alex de Minaur up to a career-best No 9 as he becomes the first Australian since Lleyton Hewitt in 2006 to be in the top 10. De Minaur’s jump sees Stefanos Tsitsipas drop out of the top 10 for the first time since February 2019.
The rest of the top 20 is largely unchanged with Nicolas Jarry moving up two places to No 19 while British No 1 Cameron Norrie drops three places to No 23 as his poor form continues.
Further down the list, Alexander Shevchenko is up to a career-high No 48 as he moved up 12 places after reaching the quarter-final in Rotterdam.
Facundo Diaz Acosta, though, was the big winner as his Argentina Open title run saw him surger 28 places to No 59. The Argentine was handed a wildcard into the tournament and ended up defeating Jarry in the final for his maiden ATP trophy.
