A budding online tennis community rivalry is developing, not among players but among fans, as Novak Djokovic’s supporters were seen inundating posts related to Ben Shelton.
Despite Shelton being new to the ATP circuit, the American has already established some tension with World No.1 Novak Djokovic. The Serbian eliminated Shelton from the 2023 US Open at the semifinal stage, and proceeded to mock Shelton’s signature “phone call” celebration after the match.
Bryan Shelton, father of Ben, did not seem too happy about the Serbian mocking his son and openly spoke out against Djokovic using the celebration. Nonetheless, the American would go on to win his maiden ATP title at last week’s Japan Open.
However, it appears the beef is not over as fans of Djokovic flocked to any post on social media involving Shelton after his title win. The aforementioned fans would insert a gif of Djokovic mimicking Shelton’s celebration, perhaps as a sign of pettiness or as a reminder to the 21-year old of his loss to the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
