Carlos Alcaraz has stoked his growing rivalry with Novak Djokovic by setting his sights on winning Olympic gold at the first attempt in 2024. He’s keen to stop the Serbian legend from achieving his first success at the Paris games by going all the way himself on his debut.
The competition between Djokovic and Alcaraz, who are at different stages of their careers, has been one of the most exciting sports battles over the past year. In their four matches in the last 12 months, Djokovic managed to beat the young contender three times.
Both players had their share of victories in the Majors – Djokovic won the Australian Open, French Open and US Open titles. He defeated Alcaraz in a nail-biting semi-final at Roland Garros before clinching the title against Casper Ruud.
But Alcaraz got his revenge in the Wimbledon final, where he claimed his first SW19 title. Now, the two-time Grand Slam winner is hoping to use this victory as a stepping stone to beat Djokovic to one of the few prizes that has eluded the Serbian so far.
“I want to win another Grand Slam and a medal at the Olympic Games, and if I only have to say one of those achievements, I would take the gold in Paris 2024 because it would be a dream come true for me,” Djokovic declared when talking about his future ambitions.
The tennis champion spoke after his triumphant match in Turin at the ATP Finals, revealing his aspirations to snatch gold at the Paris Olympics in 2024, a feat that’s notoriously evaded him so far. Djokovic confessed: “Of course, the Olympics are a huge desire of mine it’s a unique opportunity, I have a bronze from Beijing 2008.
“A lot of things are different at the Olympics you can’t bring your whole team, some of the routines you usually have are limited; there are a lot of athletes from other sports, which gives you the energy on one hand, but it drains you on the other.”
