Daniil Medvedev has continued his title defence at the Miami Open, and he will now play Jannik Sinner in a rematch of last year’s final.
Medvedev beat Chilean Nicolas Jarry, 6-2 7-6(7), last night to extend his winning streak at the tournament to nine matches after winning the title last year.
This confirmed that Medvedev would be playing the aforementioned Sinner in the semi-final, in a rematch of the 2023 Miami Open final and more recently the Australian Open final.
The Miami Open final last year saw Medvedev beat Sinner in straight sets, whereas the Italian came back from two sets down in their only Grand Slam meeting in January.
Despite this, Medvedev was full of praise for Sinner after learning his semi-final opponent, “He’s playing better and better. He’s confident, some matches where you look on TV, where he’s maybe a little bit in trouble, he manages to find solutions – that’s what champions do. It’s a great challenge for me to continue improving my game – I’ll try to show my 100 percent and go for it.”
Sinner reached his third Miami Open semi-final after beating Tomas Machac in straight sets, but did not know that he would be playing Medvedev at this point.
However, the 22-year-old previewed the possibility of playing Medvedev again, “It’s going to be a very tactical match potentially, because I have to be ready if he starts off in a similar way as in Australia.
“I have to be ready and try to understand it [Medvedev’s game] before. Maybe he’s gonna change a couple of things. So let’s see. It’s going to be an interesting test for me. Hopefully, I can show some good tennis.”
