Prince Harry is set ignore warnings and collect the Pat Tillman Award for veterans at a glittering ceremony in Los Angeles today for his work with the Invictus Games.

ESPN’s decision to give the Duke of Sussex, 39, the award has not been without controversy and tens of thousands of people have signed a Change.org petition arguing there are more deserving recipients.

The late Mr Tillman’s mother Mary Tillman said she cannot understand why the award is being given to such a “controversial and divisive” individual. Her sentiments were echoed by Lord Admiral Alan West, the ex head of the Royal Navy, who suggested the duke should ‘think long and hard’ before accepting the gong.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon officials remain hopeful that the Princess of Wales could appear to present the trophies as the tournament comes to a close.

This comes after Queen Camilla’s appearance in the Royal Box yesterday where she said it was “so nice to be able to escape for a day”.

“We’re hopeful that the Princess of Wales will be able to present the trophies as the Club’s patron, but her health and recovery is the priority,” All England Club chair Debbie Jevans told Telegraph Sport.
