Andy Murray

He isn't as much of a stranger to the sport as he makes out

Andy Murray is in the twilight of his career and his supporters were left seething when his Olympics doubles clash was only available on the iPlayer
Andy Murray fans were left fuming at BBC Sport for relegating what was potentially the tennis legend’s final ever match to the iPlayer.

The two-time Olympic champion was in action in the men’s doubles in Paris alongside Dan Evans, and despite delivering a thrilling performance that saw them triumph over Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen with scores of 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 11-9, securing a spot in the quarter-finals, fans were incensed that it wasn’t broadcast on BBC One

While swimming took precedence as a headline event, Murray’s supporters called for better planning when the tennis ace is playing. Gymnastics coverage also took priority over the Roland Garros excitement.

Disgruntled fans voiced their displeasure, with one Scottish viewer remarking, via the Daily Record: “Andy Murray’s probable last ever match. And BBC1 are showing women’s rugby 7s. Sir Andy-possibly Britain’s best ever sportsman- relegated to BBC iPlayer. Typical BBC. USELESS.

Another chimed in with their annoyance, saying: “Seriously. Watching what could’ve been Andy Murray’s last professional match and in the final set tie break you decide to switch channels? But on the iPlayer through the ‘live’ section of the tennis match. Had to go wading through all the #Olympic streams to get it.”.

One fan was left bewildered about where to catch the match, tweeting: “Help! ! ! When is Andy Murray on? @BBCSport” Not everyone was thrilled with the digital-only option, as another chimed in: “Murray on iPlayer AGAIN! ! WHY? Not everyone can access this.”

Another viewer, echoing Murray’s own fiery on-court expressions, vented their frustration with the broadcasting choice: “Why the absolute f*** is Murray/Evans not on BBC One… wasting the first set trying to log into iPlayer..”

Murray and Evans’ victory has taken them through to the quarter-finals where they will play either the American duo Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul or the Dutch pair Robin Haase and Jean-Julian Rojer.

After the win over Gille and Vliegen, a visibly moved Murray said: “It was unbelievably emotional.

“You’re unbelievably happy and then for whatever reason, I don’t know why, but happy tears. I was really emotional at the end of the match, extremely happy, excited that we managed to get through another amazing finish.”
