Kate Middleton showed signs of “tension” when her family were mentioned in an interview with ITV, a body language expert has claimed.

In a Channel 5 documentary, Kate: In Her Own Words, two body language experts weighed in on Prince William and Princess Kate’s 2010 engagement interview with ITV.

Interviewer Tom Bradby asked the happy couple about the engagement and remarked that Kate evidently has a “close-knit family”. She confirmed that family was “important” to her and hoped that she and William would have a “happy family” themselves.

However, Kate showed signs of “tension”, according to body language expert Judi James, who then suggested that the topic of Kate’s family was making her “nervous”.

Judi said: “We can see there are signs of tension from Kate. Kate’s family is mentioned and this seems to make her more nervous than actually speaking about the royals.”

Tom then asked the couple what their parents said when they told them about the engagement, with William replying that he was torn between asking Kate’s father for her hand in marriage first.

He revealed that he came to the realisation that he could refuse, so he decided it would be better to ask Kate first and then her dad couldn’t “really say no”, but Judi suggests that she was then “feeling a little bit awkward”.

Judi said at this point: “We can see her swallow. She sucks her lips in and that usually is a sign of a lack of desire to talk at that particular point, maybe feeling a little bit awkward, maybe even a little bit anxious.”

She went on to say: “We begin to see a finger tap. Now, a finger tap usually means a little bit of impatience and I’d probably prefer you to move on from this particular subject.”

Mike Carter, a second body language expert, said Kate also “hesitates” and is “very cautious”, highlighting how the princess could be seen licking her lips, which he said was a sign of anxiety.

In the interview, the Prince and Princess of Wales also addressed questions about their future children, with William saying they’d “take it one step at a time”, but they “obviously” want a family, reports the Express.

Kate, whose parents are Carole and Michael Middleton, now has three children with William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. She also has two younger siblings, Pippa and James.

It was reported in September that Carole and Michael made a rare appearance in Kate’s cancer update video, in which the princess shared that she had completed her chemotherapy treatment.
