The Princess of Wales had to deal with an unexpected gift
Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, visited the Irish Guards at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Wellington Barracks in Westminster, central London.

The Irish Guards, formed in 1900 by Queen Victoria, are experts in infantry combat. As part of the guards division, they also have a ceremonial role as protectors of the royal palaces.

Middleton has been colonel since 2023, taking over from the Prince of Wales., William. During the visit, she awarded long service and good conduct medals to soldiers within the regiment; and also met veterans of the Guards and Mini Micks, junior cadets from Northern Ireland.

During one moment of the ceremony, the Princess of Wales looked confused as she received plants as a gift. Middleton didn’t know what to do with them, so she decided to give the plants to an assistant. The Royal Family member was able to get through that part of the ceremony and she continued with her duties.

She presented traditional springs of shamrock to the Officers and Guardsmen who then issued it along the ranks, as well as presenting it to the Irish Wolf Hound regimental mascot.

Following the parade, the Princess of Wales had the opportunity to meet Guardsmen and find out more about their roles and experiences within the Irish Guards before the Senior Guardsman in the Battalion proposed a toast to the Princess.

Return of duties for Kate Middleton
Monday’s event was a return for Kate, as she missed the Guards’ annual occasion last year while undergoing treatment for cancer. She marked her return to the event by wearing a lucky green Alexander McQueen coat dress, along with black heeled boots and a percher hat. She rounded out her look with a Shamrock pin, light make-up and her hair up in a sleek do.

“She just wanted to find out how everything’s going. She’s really nice in that respect, she doesn’t just disappear. She’s warm and you feel welcomed by her,” said Guardsman Barry Loughlin.

“You could tell she had a genuine interest.” While there, Kate also handed out long service and good conduct medals to Colour Sergeant Healy, Sgt Ben Beavis, Sgt Kristian Pooley and the Operation Shader medal to Sgt Jamie Davies.
