These are just three examples of hundreds of articles belittling one of the finest assets of British sport.
In an era where we expect perfection, it’s easy to forget. Accolades should be cherished, forged in history, discussed with admiration.
The first British woman to win a Grand Slam in 44 years. To someone living under a rock, however, a Google search would suggest otherwise.
This shouldn’t be the case.
New Kid On The Block
Emma Raducanu, a British citizen, born in Canada to a Romanian father and a Chinese mother. Fluent in three languages, highly skilled at piano, a huge motorsport fan. Diligent, creative, normal.
Her attitude to tennis stems from discipline. A homage to her roots, Raducanu’s style fuses poise, precision and passion to create a unique, attack-focussed hybrid. Her on-court mannerisms speak volumes. She wasn’t born into this sport, embarking on a relentless spiral to prove her worth.
A compelling junior, Raducanu made waves in the ITF circuit. Her consistency propelled her up the rankings, going toe-to-toe with the best of her age. In Summer 2021, aged just 18 and sitting amidst the 300’s globally, Raducanu received her first senior wildcard entry to Wimbledon.
Hometown Introduction
Every young tennis player has the same dream. The West London tournament is the most prestigious of the slams, infused with a captivating heritage and tradition like no other in sport. To conquer it would be an achievement second to none.
Another British wildcard, Emma received minimal media attention, having to earn her stripes. From Court 17, to Court 12 and for her third round battle on No.1 Court, she did exactly that.
Despite having to withdraw from her fourth round tie, Raducanu’s remarkable run cemented her place amongst the next generation of stars. The British public bought into her charm, long craving the next local superstar to burst onto Tennis’ rich scene.
What came next was plucked from her wildest fantasies.
A Hundred To Zero
Then came the questions.

Where do you go from the top?
Overachieving has its downfalls. You can’t possibly be thrown further into the deep end.
Maybe it was her meteoric rise, clashing against the script in such unforeseen fashion, which triggered such menacing stirs of the pot. As the season progressed, with every loss, the comments intensified.
Clay, grass or concrete, it felt like quick sand, swallowed by high expectations. For a good 18 month period, the ball never seemed to bounce in her favour.
A succession of despondent press conferences quickly tainted her image. Not to mention, a stint of injury-plagued tournaments fuelled the back pages, criticising Britain’s golden girl in a brutal, grown-up fashion. The energetic teen had been rapidly reduced to a hurting character, sapped of the charisma which won her so many eyes.
Emma Raducanu was, once again, just another player.
Something had to change.
Second Wind
Something did change.
After another battle with illness, Emma took a step back from sport. A social media sabbatical did her good, remerging in late 2023 with a more positive approach.
Wimbledon 2024 felt like the Emma of old… a crazy statement for someone who’s only 21. A rejuvenated, forward-thinking assassin stormed through competition at demanding pace, landing a par finish with her previous best of fourth round tennis.
But it was her mental resilience that did the most talking. Her unmatched etiquette combined with a desire to grow the game off the court reignited the flame which drew in so many admirers to begin with.
This was more like it.
Chapter 22
This season feels like a turning page for Emma. Still only 22 years old, heading into her fifth Wimbledon, it’s important to remember how much this girl has already achieved.
In the midst of scrutiny and injury, her ever-present smile says all you need to know about her character. All she wants to do is work hard, have fun, and inspire the next. It’s time the media and the public let her do exactly that.
