Phil Mickelson reflected on his iconic 2012 win at Pebble Beach over Tiger Woods, calling his putter the “Tiger Slayer” in a new video breaking down a memorable round
Phil Mickelson recently shared a nostalgic moment, recalling a significant victory over Tiger Woods at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
In a YouTube video titled “Inside my mind for 9 holes,” Mickelson discussed his trusty putter, attributing it to his triumph over Woods. “This putter has slayed Tiger over the years,” Mickelson said. “Notably the best one was at the 2012 AT&T when we were in the last group. Shot 64 to his 75 and won the tournament. Lot of good memories with this putter.”
Mickelson’s comments were made before this week’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, which was won by Scottie Scheffler. Sunday’s final round was overshadowed by Amanda Balionis appearing to make a sly dig at Rory McIlroy over the latter’s snub.
The 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was a memorable event, with Mickelson delivering a stellar final round of 64, overcoming a six-shot deficit.
His performance secured a two-stroke victory over Charlie Wi, while Woods finished tied for 15th after a final round of 75.
It was one of Mickelson’s most dominant head-to-head wins against Woods, who was in contention before faltering on Sunday.
The final round matchup drew major attention, as fans and analysts viewed it as another chapter in one of golf’s most storied rivalries.
Mickelson’s ability to rise to the occasion under pressure, particularly on one of the sport’s most iconic courses, made the victory even sweeter.
Mickelson’s putter, often referred to as the “Tiger Slayer,” is an Odyssey Milled Blade model. He has used it intermittently since 2012, including during events like The Match II in 2020.
Reflecting on his rivalry with Woods, Mickelson acknowledged the challenges he faced.
“I haven’t, but I do need to premise that although I feel like he brings out the best in me, it’s only been the past five years,” he said.
“Before, I got spanked pretty good. Let’s not forget the big picture here, I’ve been beat up. But the last five years, I’ve been able to get some of my best golf out when we play together.”
Mickelson’s victory at Pebble Beach marked his 40th PGA Tour win, solidifying his status as one of golf’s greats. His performance that day remains a testament to his skill and competitive spirit.
