HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Queen’s Health Systems’ psychiatric hospital in West Oahu celebrated its one-year anniversary Friday.

Kahi Mohala was acquired by The Queen’s Health System last October from the California-based Sutter Health Pacific.

The hospital has been in operation since 1983, and serves as Hawaii’s only free-standing, nonprofit behavioral health care hospital serving youth between the ages of 4 and 17.

Services include individual and group therapy, life skills education, and substance abuse education.

“Kahi’s incredibly important. It means our commitment to behavioral health services, for child adolescents, the residential kids, and eventually, we’ll be able to build more services here on this campus. It’s just the start,” said Jason Chang, Queen’s president and CEO.

Friday’s celebration highlighted the importance of behavioral health care in Hawaii while showcasing recent enhancements, like a new art installation in the hospital’s gym and an aquaponics system.

“I envision filling this campus up with a lot of opportunities for children and adolescents,” said Sondra Leiggi Brandon, Queen’s vice president, patient care, behavioral health. “Then who knows what we can do after that, but we have plenty of land here to develop and grow, and I think the possibilities are endless.”
