HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – It may only be October, but the Christmas season is already underway at the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu.

Community leaders gathered Thursday night for a festive parol lighting ceremony in Nuuanu, featuring giant 6-foot parols direct from the Philippines’ famous parol-making region — Pampanga.

A parol is a star-shaped Filipino lantern decoration known for intricate geometric designs and bright blinking lights and come in all shapes and patterns.

It represents the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Three Wise Men to Jesus, and during the holidays, the lights adorn homes and businesses.

Some of the giant parols will be gifted to the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii State Library and Bank of Hawaii.

The University of the Philippines Rondalla music group entertained guests with holiday music.

The musicians are hosting a free performance Saturday at Ala Moana Center at 3 p.m. and free workshops Sunday at the UH Manoa Music Department at 6:30 p.m. and on Monday at the East West Center at 3 p.m.

In the Philippines, Christmas trees, music and decorations fill malls and public areas during the ‘-ber’ months: meaning September, October, November and December.
