The Grammy-winning R&B soul singer has died from pancreatic cancer, according to TMZ.
The “Brown Sugar” singer passed away Tuesday morning in New York City, according to sources connected to his family and former manager Kedar Massenberg.
In 1995, D’Angelo became a household name with his debut album, “Brown Sugar.” He would frequently collaborate with the likes of Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Q-Tip.
Throughout his career, D’Angelo went on to win 4 Grammys, including one for Best R&B album for “Voodoo” in 2001 and “Black Messiah” in 2016. His other two wins come from winning Best R&B Song in 2016 for “Really Love” and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “United (How Does It Feel).”
“How Does It Feel” went on to be a cultural phenomenon with its iconic video featuring the sultry singer by himself against a blank, black background, appearing to be in the nude.
Just last year, Raphael Saadiq told the “Rolling Stone Music Now” podcast that D’Angelo was working on an album to be released soon and that “He’s excited He’s working on six pieces right now and seems super excited.”
D’Angelo is survived by his two sons and daughter. The mother of his first son was singer Angie Stone, who tragically died earlier this year.
RIP D’Angelo, you will be missed.
