Andy Murray ‘gutted’ as first Novak Djokovic clash for six years scuppered
Fitness issues have hampered the 36-year-old in recent years as he plays in the twilight stages of his career.
Great Britain travel to Malaga on Thursday for their Davis Cup last-eight clash against Serbia, captained by world no.1 Novak Djokovic.
Murray could therefore have faced the 24-time Grand Slam champion for the first time since 2017, but their reunion will now have to wait.
“I’ve picked up a minor shoulder injury which means I won’t be able to take part in the Davis Cup,” the former Wimbledon champion said.
“I’m gutted not to be part of the squad but my focus is now on rehab and getting ready for the new season.”
Andy Murray played a key role in Great Britain’s route to the Davis Cup finals as he beat Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi 6-7 6-4 6-4.
However, he has lost five of his last six matches, with Alex De Minaur most recently defeating him 7-6 4-6 7-5 at the Paris Masters.
He and Djokovic have treated tennis fans to an exciting rivalry across 36 matches but it’s been six years since they last shared the court.
The latter beat the former at the Qatar Open and his French Open final win in 2016 was their most recent Grand Slam encounter.
Murray is not the only injury Great Britain have had to deal with prior to the Davis Cup finals as Dan Evans withdrew due to a calf issue.
Cameron Norrie, Jack Draper, Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury will represent the 2015 champions, with Liam Broady also set to join.
For now though, Murray may have to wait for a return to action until the new season as he recovers from his latest setback.
