IT’S fair to say that Andy Murray is a man who likes a challenge.
The Scottish tennis legend make it all the way from Dunblane to become a three-time Grand Slam winner.
Not only that, he then defied the doctors by playing on for another five years with a metal hip.
So it should hardly be a surprise that he has knuckled down to a fresh challenge now that he has decided to hang up the tennis racquet for good.
The 37-year-old has no shortage of other things to be getting on with – wife Kim, for instance, said at the time of his retirement that from the sport that she was looking forward to having some help with the school run.
But sport is in his blood – and the golf course seems like it will be his next venue.
Sharing a video clip of himself on what appeared to be a driving range, Andy wrote: “First ever golf lesson today on the journey to become a scratch golfer! Any tips welcome!”
While his tongue was in cheek, it’s worth pointing out that golf also runs in the Murray family.
There’s a fair bit of crossover between golf and tennis and the 18th hole at Dunblane Golf Course is actually named ‘The Murrays ‘ Hame’ in recognition of the family.
Andy and Jamie were both junior members at the club – and they’re both honorary lifetime members with Jamie in particular a fine golfer in his earlier days.
Jamie has previously said: “I spent most of my life down here (at the sports club), and when I wasn’t playing tennis I was playing golf.
“I remember in the summer when the weather was good enough I’d be out here till 10.30pm.”
A golf club source said at the time: “We chose to give them this recognition because of their achievements, and both boys were junior members here.
“Jamie was a three or a four handicapped player and spent a lot of time here.”
