British tennis star Andy Murray has announced his withdrawal from this year’s Davis Cup after his exit from the ongoing US Open. Murray suffered a defeat against his longtime rival Grigor Dimitrov, with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-1, inside the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium – the very court where he clinched his maiden Grand Slam title in 2012.

In the 12th meeting between two veterans of the sport, and seven years after their last one, 19th seed Dimitrov registered only his fourth win over the Scot.

At 4-1 down in the third, he gestured to his support team that the match was over as a contest and the former world number one was proved to be right two games later as another attempt to challenge in the later rounds of a grand slam fell well short.

Andy Murray, ranked 37th, has not reached the last 16 of a major since resuming his career after hip surgery in 2019.

Dimitrov, who reached the US Open semi-finals in 2019, will play German 12th seed Alexander Zverev in the last 32.
