Andy Murray revealed his reluctance to get haircuts and explained why his wife, Kim, took it upon herself to step in and handle the task.
Andy Murray revealed that his wife cut his hair because he found it to be a “massive hassle” otherwise. The world No 41 described a 75-minute ordeal with a hairdresser that saw him turn to Kim to take on the job. And Murray also opened up on his post-match routine involving a specific Shakira song that he took a liking to.
Murray got candid in a recent video that saw his rivals take it in turn to ask him some questions via the ATP. And it was the 36-year-old’s countryman Jack Draper who quizzed Murray about his barnet – asking who cut his hair. With both men hailing from Britain and playing on the same Davis Cup team, the world No 105 may well have known the answer already, forcing Murray to tell the unusual story.
“Usually it’s my wife that cuts my hair,” the three-time Major winner responded. “I hate going to the hairdressers, get no enjoyment out of it at all and I find it a massive hassle. But my wife is often nagging me to go to the hairdressers and I just tell her if she wants me to get it cut, then she can cut it.”
Asked to elaborate, Murray revealed that he once waited 75 minutes for a hairdresser to finish the job – an excruciating experience that led his wife Kim to step in. He continued: “Basically, I never liked going to the hairdressers. She was always encouraging me to do it and then she said, ‘Well, I’ll get someone to come and cut it at home.’
“And it took like an hour and 15 minutes and I was like, ‘This should be max 20 minutes for me, I’m not doing that again.’ So then she just started doing it with the clippers and the scissors.”
But the former world No 1 still had some criticisms of his wife’s skills, adding: “She does an okay job but obviously she’s not trained so sometimes I’ll notice it a few days later that there’s like four or five hairs that are much longer than all of the other ones. But she does a decent job.”
Murray also shared another funny anecdote about his post-match routine as Denis Shapovalov asked him what song he chose to listen to after some tough defeats on the court. The Brit had one clear answer involving Shakira, and admitted that he listened to the song no matter what.
“Recently I’ve been listening to – not just after losses but I like the song anyway – Try Everything from Shakira, I like that song,” he said before throwing in a second answer. “And then I’m going to add this as well, this is a song that I listen to kind of at all times, winning or losing. It’s by Gerry Cinnamon and it’s called Canter which is another go-to for me.”
