Hamad Medjedovic presents another early test for Carlos Alcaraz in their Cincinnati Open Round of 32 showdown.

Hamad Medjedovic faces the daunting challenge of taking on Carlos Alcaraz in a Round of 32 matchup this afternoon on Center Court at the Cincinnati Open. But the 22-year-old from Serbia arrives ready to surprise.

Currently ranked No. 73, Medjedovic broke into the top 100 this year after reaching the final in Marseille, where he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals. That run also included wins over Karen Khachanov in the Round of 16 and Holger Rune earlier in Copenhagen. Clearly, Medjedovic can go toe-to-toe with the top 20 talent — and he certainly has the potential to climb into those ranks.

But two injuries — in Doha and Wimbledon — have stalled his momentum this season. Durability, not talent, has been the main obstacle in his rise.

Still, Medjedovic is building steam in Cincinnati, winning his first two matches in straight sets. Like Damir Dzumhur in the previous round, this Bosniak could test Alcaraz, especially on hard courts, where the Spaniard is slightly less dominant.

After overcoming a tense opener against Dzumhur — calling it a “roller coaster” — Alcaraz now chases his 50th win of the season, but it may require surviving another roller-coaster ride.
