Charlie Woods won’t be playing the U.S. Open this year.
The 16-year-old son of Tiger Woods shot 3-over par 75 at Wellington Golf Club in Florida on Thursday, finishing seven strokes off the qualifying score of 68.
It’s the second straight year Woods failed to qualify for the tournament, but his showing on Thursday was an improvement on his attempt last spring, when he shot 9-over 81 at the Legacy Golf and Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie.
Woods was one of 10,202 entries for the 125th U.S. Open, which will take place June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
Tony Romo, former tennis player Mardy Fish and Rangers forward J.T. Miller are other well-known golfers aiming to qualify for the tournament.
Charlie’s father will also be missing the U.S. Open action.
The elder Woods announced in March that he underwent surgery after rupturing his left Achilles tendon while training at home.
The 49-year-old and 15-time major champion hasn’t played in a tournament since the British Open last July, when he missed the cut.
He was believed to be gearing himself up to play in the Masters in April at the time of the announcement.
“As I began to ramp up my own training and practice at home, I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured,” Woods said in a statement posted on social media. “This morning, Dr. Charlton Stucken of Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida performed a minimally-invasive Achilles tendon repair for a ruptured tendon.
