Medvedev, competing under a neutral status, faced Rinky Hijikata from Australia, who is ranked 76th in the ATP rankings.
The Russian secured a convincing win over his opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The favorite needed just 1 hour of playing time to claim victory.

In the second round of the Olympic tournament, Medvedev will play against the winner of the match between Sebastian Ofner (Austria) and Robin Haase (Netherlands).
