Denis Shapovalov of Canada serves against Roman Safiullin in the Men's Singles fourth-round match during day seven of The Championships Wimbledon 2023

Denis Shapovalov, who hasn’t competed since Wimbledon, is facing a drop in his ATP Tour ranking, which will place him outside the top 100 for the first time in six years.

Denis Shapovalov was considered a great talent a few years ago. The Canadian was supposed to break out and become a Top 10 player. While he did visit the Top 10, he never consistently remained there due to the inability to deliver consistently.

He’s had some superb wins and played some amazing tennis at times, but not this year or last year. He broke into the Top 10 in September of 2020, which was quite a while ago.

He hovered around there for about a year but then started to slowly dip. Injuries derailed him this year and certainly contributed to his downfall before that, which is a shame because he’s a really good player when he can play regularly.

This year has particularly been terrible for Shapovalov, whose last match came at Wimbledon. He’s missed all events since then, pulling out of each leading up to them.

We don’t know what his status is as he hasn’t provided many updates, but it seems like he’s taking a slow approach to recovery, trying to avoid rushing back too soon.

Life outside of the courts has been going well for him, so at least he’s happy with that. Tennis, though, isn’t going well, and he’s staring at a very tough road back. The lack of play saw his ranking drop severely as he’s about to drop out of the Top 100.

It would be the first time he’s out of the Top 100 in six years. He’s currently 93rd, which is his lowest rank since August of 2017. Next week’s ranking will see him drop out of the Top 100 officially, which again will be the lowest rank since August of 2017.
