His first role came as the first-tee announcer at The Open in 1975 at Carnoustie, a position that he held for a staggering 41 years.

Robson was famed for never taking bathroom breaks, determined not to miss a single stroke of the action.

Renowned for his distinctive Scottish accent, Robson was known for his famous “On the tee …” introduction.

Woods took part in 22 Open Championships during his career, winning three of them, and took to social media to pay tribute to Robson.

He wrote: “Thank you Ivor for making each one of my Open starts so memorable.”

Robson retired in 2015 and worked his final Open that same year.

R&A CEO Martin Slumbers said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of Ivor’s passing.

“His voice was instantly recognisable and synonymous with the championship for players and millions of golf fans worldwide.

“He was popular and well respected among all golfers who played in The Open and I know that they will share in our sadness at this news.”

Ryder Cup legend Ian Poulter was also quick to pay his respects, with the 47-year-old sharing a picture of the two on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Captioning the post, he stated: “Ivor Robson the Voice of the Open Championship. You sadly have left us today but your voice and happiness hasn’t.

“RIP My Friend. First tee memories will last forever.”

Poutler’s ex-Team Europe teammate Graeme McDowell remarked: “Very sad news with the passing of Ivor Robson & thoughts to his family.

“I’ve never seen someone take pride in their job like he did.

“One of the coolest moments of my career was having him announce me on the tee as the US Open Champ & also the Scottish Open after I won at Pebble.”
