HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hundreds gathered to help raise money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in Kapiolani Park Saturday morning.

The ALS Network hosted the 13th Annual Hawaii Walk and Roll to Cure ALS to bring together the community for a family-friendly morning of exercise, education, awareness, inspiration, music, and fun to help those affected by ALS.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative illness that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Those with ALS lose the ability to move, speak, swallow, and, eventually, breathe while their minds and senses usually continue to function.

Organizers said more than 300 people helped raise over $90,000 for the fight against ALS.

“What’s important is that all the money that is raised here in Hawaii is put directly back into the patients that are living with ALS here on the islands,” said Nathan Alvarez, with the ALS Network. “It helps us highlight our three mission pillars of care, advocacy, and research, which just drives our search for effective prevention strategies, treatments, and cures for ALS.”

Saturday’s event also featured performances by Kuu Wa Hula, food, games, ice bucket challenges, and a resource fair of vendors that serve the ALS community.

Organizers said this year’s fundraising goal is to raise $125,000, and those who couldn’t attend Saturday’s event can still donate online.
