The WTA Finals or as it was dubbed by some Cancun Chaos saw barely filled stands, the stadium not completed until days before the tournament began and players speaking out in their droves about the issues currently faced in the women’s game.
Swiatek as World No.1 has become a voice for such issues and her coach Tomasz Wiktorowski spoke as the 2023 season came to an end with a damning verdict on the WTA Finals.
He called it an embarrassment and said he would only ever return there for tourism purposes. But not just that as he admitted that he isn’t happy with the WTA’s function and current direction and players should be speaking out even more than they currently are about it.
He ended it off by saying that he sees an organisation struggling to survive instead of thriving which is a concern.
“In terms of tourism, I see great potential of this place. And maybe one day I will go to Mexico to learn more about the history of this civilization. However, I hope that I will never have to fly there again for business and tennis purposes. It was an embarrassment in terms of the decision-making process and organization of the tournament,” said Wiktorowski to publication Rzeczpospolita.
“I am very disappointed with the way the WTA has been functioning recently and I am starting to believe that tennis players should unite to speak about the most important issues to them with one voice,” Wiktorowski continued.
“10 years ago, I trusted the WTA and was impressed by how it creates conditions for tennis players to develop, work and even function after the end of their careers. At the moment, it looks like the WTA is an organization struggling to survive and managed in a way that is not entirely favorable to the players.”
