Andy Murray would be welcomed into the commentary box with open arms by John McEnroe once he finally retires from tennis.
John McEnroe would relish working with Andy Murray at Wimbledon – once the British icon finally hands up his racquet. Murray’s participation in next week’s tournament has been mired in confusion after he was prematurely ruled out.

Governing body, the ATP Tour, reported that Murray was “sadly out of Wimbledon” after undergoing back surgery. However, the post on X (formerly Twitter) was promptly deleted and it later transpired it was posted on the back of a report in the Telegraph, which suggests Murray will be out for six weeks following a procedure on a spinal cyst.

It is understood Murray is yet to make a decision on whether he will compete and will evaluate over the next few days. Whether he gets his SW19 swansong or not, the end of the 37-year-old’s illustrious career is imminent and his thoughts will have already turned to life after top-level tennis.

The Scot has previously hinted a job in the media could be on the cards. Pundit and tennis icon McEnroe would welcome Murray and another great of the game, Rafael Nadal, into the TV studio.

McEnroe told inews: “I wouldn’t mind working with them if they were doing it. I’d love to, it’d be fun.

“Andy’s got that dry sense of humour. I don’t know him that well, but everything I hear off the court, he likes to be light hearted and have fun.

“It depends how he would approach it but I’ve heard him a little bit talk about some matches, and he obviously knows a game inside out. He’d have obviously the insight of having played a lot of these players so from that standpoint, it would be quite interesting.”

McEnroe doubts the legendary Roger Federer will ever become a regular pundit. The American added: “I don’t anticipate Roger doing tennis commentary. He’s got a lot of other things going on.”
