Emma Raducanu has faced plenty of ups and downs since her historic US Open title in 2021, but this week, Jamie Murray gave her one of the most sobering evaluations yet.
The British doubles specialist and brother of tennis legend Andy Murray compared Raducanu’s current level with fellow Brit Jack Draper. He suggested that she’s “miles away” from where Draper is right now in terms of consistent performance and standing on the tour.
Jamie Murray Highlighted Emma Raducanu’s Inconsistency Against Jack Draper’s Breakthrough
Raducanu, now ranked No. 45 in the world, has struggled to replicate the magic of her Grand Slam breakthrough in New York nearly four years ago. That astonishing run made her the first qualifier in Open Era history to win a Major title. Since then, she has battled injuries, form slumps, and frequent coaching changes.
Meanwhile, Draper has been quietly and steadily climbing the ATP ranks. With three titles, including a prestigious Masters 1000 crown in Indian Wells, he is currently ranked World No. 5.
Murray made his stance clear in a recent interview with The Mirror, contrasting Raducanu’s current trajectory with Draper’s more upward curve. “He’s putting results together all the time, he’s proven that he’s world-class and a top player,” Murray said of Draper.
“That’s miles away from being at the level that Jack is at. Of course, [Emma] had an unbelievable result at the US Open. But she obviously needs to win a lot more matches to be talked about as a contender for these tournaments.”
He added, “The hype is obviously massive based on her story of winning the US Open a few years ago. Not to talk bad about Emma, but Jack is in a completely different place in his career than where she is.”
Murray Assessed Raducanu and Draper’s Wimbledon Results
Draper and Raducanu recently concluded their grasscourt campaign at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. Raducanu made her fourth appearance at SW19, cruising past compatriot Mingge Xu and the 2023 champ Markéta Vondroušová to reach the third round, where she lost in straight sets to top seed Aryna Sabalenka.
“She actually got a good draw, playing a young British girl (Mimi Xu) in the first match. But if you’re unseeded, then you’re going to have to play top players pretty early in the event. I would say the third round is a good result, all things considered. She had a competitive match with Sabalenka.”
On the other hand, Draper, who was seeded fourth in the event, defeated Sebastian Baez (walkover) to reach the second round, where he lost in four sets to Marin Čilić.
“Jack had a disappointing Wimbledon for him, but it was a tough draw in Cilic when the guy has won Grand Slams, been in finals, loves playing on grass, and is a former Queens winner, that’s a tough match for him,” Murray said.
“I’m sure he’ll come back stronger next year and in the future years and he’ll be at the top of the game for 10 years – he’ll be one of the guys in that chasing pack trying to get to the level of [Jannik] Sinner and [Carlos] Alcaraz and compete with them on the biggest stage,” he added.
