In a recently unearthed video from 2020, the Princess of Wales shares a laugh during a visit to a retirement home in Cardiff.

HELLO! magazine has unearthed a royal anecdote proving that Kate Middleton has a charming answer for everything, even when being mistaken for her husband’s assistant. In 2020, Prince William and Princess Kate visited the residents of a Cardiff retirement home, a few months after playing bingo with them via Zoom.

The couple were reunited with 87-year-old patient Joan Drew-Smith, who was quick to question their bingo skills after their game. They are, after all, game enthusiasts and great competitors. “You may not recognize us, but we played bingo with you and you won,” began Prince William. “But you said we didn’t do a very good job?” “No, you did a crap job,” reiterated the patient. “Excellent!” responded William, laughing out loud, promptly imitated by the rest of the assembly.

“Is this your assistant?” Drew-Smith then asked, pointing to the Princess of Wales, seated next to William, her face half-hidden behind a mask. Amused by the remark, the Brit immediately laughed and replied: “Well, I’m his assistant! I have been for a long time!” Following the resident’s outspokenness, Prince William told the staff he “adored Joan.” “She’s brilliant,” he said after the visit.

Despite their popularity and titles, Kate and William’s faces are sometimes unfamiliar to those who meet them. Like the Scottish schoolboy who, in November 2023, asked the Princess of Wales about her identity. “Who am I?” she replied. “I’m married to William,” she humbly explained, pointing to the future king who was greeting other children in the background.
