Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris had an awkward exchange in the cooldown room following the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Oscar Piastri claimed victory at the Hungaroring on Sunday to win his first Formula 1 Grand Prix, with Norris finishing second and Hamilton third.
It saw McLaren seal a one-two podium finish following one of the most dramatic races of the 2024 calendar so far.
When sitting in the cooldown room afterwards, Mercedes star was on hand to praise McLaren for their impressive drives on the day.
“Hoo, you guys are fast!” he said, but it appeared to turn into a frosty conversation between him and his fellow Brit Norris.
“You had a fast car seven years ago,” replied Norris, who seemingly alluded to the 39-year-old’s World Championship win in 2017.
Hamilton appeared confused and responded: “Seven years ago? That’s a long time, were you here seven years ago?”
“You know, you had a quick car. You made the most of it and now it’s us!” said Norris defiantly.
Hamilton then added: “I wasn’t complaining, I was just complimenting you on your car.”
Norris’ comments come four years since he claimed that Hamilton should win every race after he won his 92nd race at the Portugal Grand Prix, beating the legendary Michael Schumacher’s record.
“I’m just happy for him, nothing more,” he said via PlanetF1.com. It doesn’t mean anything to me, really. He’s in a car which should win every race, basically.
“He has to beat one or two other drivers, that’s it. Fair play to him, he’s still doing the job he has to do.”
Piastri entered the room around halfway through the exchange but opted not to get involved as he reflected on his maiden win.
The Australian led his teammate Norris for most of the race after he overtook him at the first corner.
However, McLaren opted to send the latter into the pits before Piastri in what was a controversial team decision.
Norris was then asked on various occasions to hand first position back to his teammate and eventually did so with two laps remaining.
Hamilton’s third place finish was also spawned from controversy after he and Max Verstappen made contact.
Verstappen went to overtake the Mercedes man late by taking the inside of turn one but they collided to send his back wheels flying.
The world champion claimed that the incident was Hamilton’s fault as he moved into his ‘braking zone’, but this was laughed off by his rival.
However, stewards went on to confirm that no further action would be taken as neither driver was said to be ‘predominantly to blame’.
