Leylah Fernandez

Leylah Fernandez is excited about measuring herself against some of the best at the United Cup in preparation for the 2024 season.

Leylah Fernandez had a rude awakening following her 2021 US Open run to the final as she struggled to find the same tennis again. She was losing matches, failing to sort of find anything remotely close to that level, and even endured a few injuries along the way.

The latter part of 2023 saw her kind of rediscover her old self as she played really well in Asia, winning a trophy there. She then led Canada to the Billie Jean King Cup trophy, winning some pretty big matches.

That was an excellent confidence builder ahead of 2024, which could be a huge year for Fernandez if she continues to build. The potential was always there as that lefty forehand is one of the most dangerous ones on the WTA Tour when it’s clicking.

Her season will begin at the United Cup which is a great chance for her to face some strong players early on in the season. She’s excited about it because it’s a great way to test her level ahead of the big one in Melbourne.

It’s extremely important. We’ve been training extremely hard in the pre-season. To be able to get the opportunity to have some match play against top-10 players in this format, it’s going to see where we are with our level, if it’s high, what we need to work on, get ready for the Australian Open.

As mentioned above, 2024 is a really important season for Fernandez. It’s time to fully realize that potential and become one of the better players in the world. The sport won’t wait for you, and if she falls behind again, it will be pretty tricky to catch up.

Being healthy is obviously always part of the equation, so hopefully, she will stay healthy for the entirety of this upcoming season.
