Meghan Markle’s smart move to delay Netflix show avoids risk of being branded ‘tone-deaf’
Meghan Markle saved herself from massive backlash by postponing the release of her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
The Duchess of Sussex revealed that her show, which was originally set to premiere this week, will now debut on March 4 on the streaming giant.
In a statement shared to People Magazine, Meghan said that she made the decision to delay the show’s release to focus on supporting those affected by the wildfires in her home state.
Sharing her take on the matter, a PR expert praised Meghan’s move, saying that the Duchess smart move to delay the show has saved herself from getting backlash for being “tone deaf” to the ongoing crisis.
Speaking with The Mirror, PR and personal branding expert Mayah Riaz said, “Given the severity of the wildfires, which have resulted in loss of life and property, proceeding with the show’s original release date could have been perceived as insensitive.”
She added, “By postponing the premiere, Meghan acknowledges the gravity of the situation and prioritises the wellbeing of those affected.”
“This decision not only reflects her personal commitment to the community but also enhances her public image as a conscientious and empathetic figure.
“In terms of choice, while Meghan could have proceeded with the original release, doing so might have attracted criticism for being tone-deaf to the ongoing crisis.
“Delaying the show allows her to avoid potential backlash and demonstrates respect for the affected communities.
“With regards to potential risks associated with postponing the show, it’s important to consider the context. The delay is relatively short, moving the premiere from January 15 to March 4.”
