It is the end of an era for the widely used operating system Windows 10, as Microsoft ended automatic security updates and support for the operating system on Tuesday.
The change impacts millions of PC users.
If you have a newer computer capable of running Windows 11, you need to install the new operating system because it will not automatically update.
However, even if you have an older computer that cannot upgrade to Windows 11, you still have options.
“We estimate that something like 400 million computers will be left behind by the end of Windows 10,” said Nathan Proctor of Public Interest Group. “So, this is a very widespread problem. You’re going to lose access to some of the features and security that you might depend on.”
Here’s what you can do to keep using your existing computer instead of buying a new one.
For $30, Microsoft will provide one year of extended security updates. For businesses, the cost is double.
There is also a free Microsoft option, but it requires connecting your OneDrive account and enabling cloud backup.
The issue is that some backups might exceed the free storage limit so, then you’re going to have to pay Microsoft for more storage anyway.
So, either way, if you can’t upgrade to Windows 11, if you want to stay secure through Microsoft, you’re probably going to have to pay the company.

You can also switch operating systems and use one such as Chrome Flex by Google or Linux Mint. However, you need to know that some programs on your computer might be incompatible with an operating system other than Windows.
If you chose to install a different operating system, you can do it yourself or have a repair shop do it for you.
