An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 7.6 struck off the tip of South America this morning, but does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The major temblor struck at 10:29 a.m. Hawaii time and its epicenter was located about 589.7 miles southeast of Punta Arenas, Region of Magallanes, Chile, at a depth of 6.5 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.
However, a tsunami threat message was issued for the village of Puerto Williams and the city of Punta Arenas, both in Chile. “Hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter along the coasts of Chile,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
