The crash sent a total of eight students and the bus driver a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries, the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office says.

Deputies conducted a traffic homicide investigation using video footage from the school bus, which revealed that a passenger vehicle crossed several feet over the center line and into the path of the bus. The sheriff’s office says the bus driver took evasive action to avoid a head-on collision, but the vehicle continued into the lane, striking the bus and causing the crash.

The sheriff’s office says the bus driver acted quickly to protect the students on board and avoid a more serious collision.
