PUUNENE (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Maui Humane Society announced on social media Friday that approximately 20 dogs may be euthanized by the end of the month if they are not adopted.
The shelter said that it can no longer safely house the number of animals in its care.
“Our shelter population has exceeded what is safe and sustainable,” said the post. “When we exceed that threshold, animals suffer.
“Healthy animals become sick, sick animals struggle to recover, and stressed animals are increasingly difficult to calm,” it added.
Earlier this year, the shelter said that help from the community prevented similar euthanasia measures.
As part of a large-scale “life-saving protocol crisis response,” the organization is asking the public to take in dogs facing medical or behavioral challenges.

“We have exhausted every other outcome, including transfer, rescue, and return-to-owner when appropriate,” the post said. “Adoption and transfer are the only pathways forward.”
Dogs not placed by Oct. 30 will be humanely euthanized, according to the shelter.
