As the American economy continues to reel in the aftermath of widespread cuts by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, golfer Phil Mickelson is praising DOGE for its efforts.

Musk recently made an appearance on Fox Business and was interviewed by former National Economic Council director Larry Kudlow.

The Tesla CEO made the claim that thanks to his cuts, the American government was saving more than ‘$4billion per day’ and that the department would go on to save more than a trillion dollars.

Mickelson, who notably took millions of dollars to defect from the PGA Tour to join the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf, shared a clip from that appearance along with some words of encouragement.

‘It’s incredibly kind and generous of Elon Musk to help America become fiscally responsible,’ Mickelson posted to his account on X, formerly Twitter. ‘We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude.’

The golfer then went on to compare Musk to the inventor Nicola Tesla, the namesake of the car company that the South African-born billionaire owns.

‘Nicola Tesla was unappreciated while he was alive despite his numerous contributions to humanity. I hope Elon is shown the appreciation he deserves in his lifetime.’

The comparison makes little sense, seeing as Tesla (the person) did not at any point in his lifetime become as involved in the American federal government as Musk did.

After making this post – which was viewed over 1.7million times – a number of people began slamming the 54-year-old golfer for his take.

‘Jesus Phil have you ever lost the plot man,’ one person posted in reply to the six-time major winner.

Another joked that Mickelson might be the, ‘First golfer to have CTE.’

Political commentator John Harwood posted, ‘don’t take advice on governing our society from smarmy professional golfers.’

MSNBC’s Sam Stein joked, ‘Phil Mickelson touting the need for fiscal responsibility,’ while another pointed out that the golfer ‘Lost $100million gambling.’

‘Phil becoming this tone deaf, combined with how irrelevant he’s become is truly one of the sadder sports stories of the past decade,’ said another user.

For what it’s worth, Mickelson’s words found their way to Musk – the man who displayed a pair of Nazi salutes at Trump’s inauguration – who responded with a ‘Thank you’.

A recent poll conducted in late February by CBS News/YouGov found that 52 percent of Americans believe that Musk and DOGE has ‘too much authority’ to cut down on the federal workforce.

It’s been about two years since Mickelson made the decision to join the Saudi rebel tour. Trump has been making attempts to try to unite LIV and the PGA Tour in his first few months in office.
