Scottie Scheffler affirmed his status as the No. 1 golfer in the world this weekend, overcoming early adversity to emerge with the 2025 PGA Championship. Scheffler has been the world No. 1 for over two calendar years, but he seemed to be a step behind to begin the year.

Scheffler didn’t win his first tournament of the season until May, and a fellow golfer made a prediction about how his season would go back in March.

“Does Scottie win in 2025 before the Ryder Cup? I don’t think so,” Mickelson said back on March 16. Scheffler is now a two-time winner – one being a major title, the third of his career – with months to spare until the Ryder Cup in September.

Fans on social media reacted to Mickelson’s prediction for Scheffler after he took home the PGA Championship.

“Good thing Phil’s not a betting man,” one fan said, sarcastically.

“Circling back here Philip,” another fan said.

“Phil, you’ve been known to wager a few pennies here and there. Friendly wager on this?,” said another fan.

“This one aged like warm milk,” said one fan.

“I love Phil, but this is slowly becoming the funniest tweet of all time,” another fan added.

Scheffler won by five shots on Sunday to take home his third career major at the age of 28. He’s already halfway done with the career grand slam after two previous wins at the Masters, with only the US Open and Open Championship eluding him.

As Mickelson mentioned, Scheffler will also be a part of the United States’ Ryder Cup team this fall against Europe, marking his third appearance in the event.

Scheffler helped the United States win in his debut in 2021, and he also represented his country in 2023 for the event in held in Rome. Scheffler has a great deal of experience in international golf, as he’s a two-time Presidents Cup winner and an Olympic gold medalist.

Mickelson will head back to LIV Golf until the next major on the schedule, the US Open. Scheffler will look to win the event for the first time in his career, while Mickelson will seek to do the same – the crown jewel of American golf is the only major he has yet to win.
