Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez has shed light on the difficulties surrounding his performance in the RB20 F1 car, despite his recent third-place qualification at Spa-Francorchamps. The Mexican driver’s insights reveal the car’s intricate performance issues and Red Bull’s ongoing efforts to harness its full potential.
Perez remains committed to Red Bull through the remainder of the season despite the recent questions surrounding his future with the team. During a discussion with the media, as quoted by GPBlog, Perez described the RB20 as “definitely pickier and harder” to operate effectively.
The Red Bull driver remarked on the sensitivity of the updated vehicles, noting that recent changes have “made this window a lot smaller.”
“It’s definitely been pickier and harder. At the moment, we feel like there has there has been something that we have introduced in a few of the weekends that whether it’s with an upgrade or with setup or with the tyres, these cars are so sensitive, that has made this window a lot smaller.”
Despite these setbacks, Perez does not view Red Bull’s situation as unique in the competitive arena of Formula 1.
“But like I said there will be teams that will be in a similar situation to us. There are teams that have been in this situation, but Red Bull is obviously a lot more noticeable. But it’s OK. I think the focus is over there.”
The Mexican driver remains optimistic about imminent improvements based on simulation tests he has performed, which may provide the breakthrough needed.
“I’ve tried that [change] in the sim. It felt positive. It helped my feeling with the car. So I really hope that it translates well to the track and we’ll see.”
Perez signed a two-year contract extension with Red Bull earlier in the season. He explained as part of the announcement of his extended commitment, as quoted by Sky Sports F1:
“I am delighted to be staying here to continue our journey together and contribute to this team’s great history for two more years.
“Being part of the team is an immense challenge, and one I love. We have a great challenge this year and I have full trust in the whole team that the future is bright here and I am excited to be part of it.”
Team principal Christian Horner stated:
“Now is an important time to confirm our line-up for 2025 and we are very pleased to continue working together with Checo.
“Continuity and stability are important for the team and both Checo and Max are a successful and robust partnership, securing our first ever one-two finish for the team in the championship last year.”
