“Tiger Woods won’t participate in the upcoming 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy, but Team USA captain Zach Johnson has previously expressed his desire to tap into the golf legend’s extensive experience.”

The 2023 Ryder Cup will not have the presence the iconic Tiger Woods taking part for Team USA, but he is still set to have a role to play.

The 15-time major champion has played at eight previous Ryder Cups, most recently in 2018 in Paris, which Team Europe won. He has not played on American soil in the tournament since 2012 in the famous “Miracle of Mediah”, also won by Europe.

In total, Woods has won 14.5 points for Team USA across his appearances., but has only managed to be part of the winning team on one occasion which came back in 1999 at Brookline. However, this year’s tournament will not see the golf legend on the tee or the the team room as he continues his rehabilitation from surgery.

Since suffering life-changing injuries in a car crash back in 2021, Woods has only been competing on the PGA Tour on a part-time basis. He featured at the Masters earlier this year but withdrew before the start of his fourth and final round despite making the cut.

Despite not being at this year’s Ryder Cup, Team USA captain Zach Johnson has previously stated his desire to use Woods’ vast experience to their advantage and lean on his expertise during the week even if he can’t be in attendance.

“Tiger is very much a part of Team USA and has been for years,” Johnson told AP on September 9 . “He is, for lack of a better term, on call with us. He is very much in the know as to what we’re trying to do.

“We’re going to utilise his wisdom and he’s passionate about the Ryder Cup. He wishes he could be here, but it’s just not on the cards for him physically. And that’s fine. I mean, he is with us. He’s just not here physically.”

Back in April, a statement on Woods’ condition was released on behalf of the 47-year-old following his withdrawal from the Masters. Woods underwent surgery on his ankle and has not played on the PGA Tour since his exit from Augusta National.

“Earlier today, Tiger underwent a subtalar procedure to address his post-traumatic arthritis from his previous talus fracture.

“It was performed by Dr Martin O’Malley at HSS Sports Medicine Institute in New York City. He has determined the surgery to be successful. Tiger is currently recovering and looks forward to beginning his rehabilitation.”
