The 48-year-old has remained out of the public eye over the last few months but is set to step back in front of the cameras this week as he prepares to host his own tournament
Tiger Woods is set to attend his first press conference in five months when he provides a health update at the Hero World Challenge in Albany, The Bahamas, on Tuesday.
The 48-year-old, who turns 49 on December 30, has not spoken to the media since failing to make the cut at the 152nd Open at Royal Troon in Scotland in mid-July. The golfing legend then underwent his sixth back surgery shortly after and has been recuperating ever since.
Woods underwent microdecompression surgery on his lumbar spine for a nerve impingement in his lower back, but has not made a full recovery in time to feature at this year’s Hero World Challenge, where he will be hosting the tournament.
This is despite the operation, which took place in West Palm Beach, being declared successful by his doctors, although Woods himself has already acknowledged that he isn’t quite up to the tee yet in a statement shared to his social media pages on November 25.
Back troubles weren’t Woods’ only concern, however, having already been recovering from injuries to his ankle and leg prior to the recent surgery, which stemmed from the near-fatal car accident he experienced in Los Angeles in February 2021.
Nonetheless, his first-in person appearance is due to come tomorrow morning (Tue, Dec 3) at 9am (local time) where he is expected to update the media on both his health status and whether he’ll be able to participate in the PNC Championship alongside son, Charlie, just before Christmas.
That’s according to the TW Legion account on X (formerly Twitter) which revealed on Monday: “Tiger Woods will hold a news conference from Albany, Bahamas on Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM. The presser, which is a routine as part of his role as tournament host, will see Woods deliver his first health update since undergoing back surgery in September.”

Hosted by Woods and the PGA Tour, the Hero World Challenge is an exclusive gathering with a 20-man field that doesn’t count as an official PGA Tour event but does offer Points towards the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), which stirs up some contention among those involved with LIV Golf.
But with Woods not present at his own tournament this week, it means current World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is considered the hot favorite to defend his title.
The former World No.1 participated in all four majors in 2024 but failed to make the cut in three of them, with his only success coming at The Masters, although he ended up finishing last among those who made it to the weekend at Augusta National.
Once he turns 50 at the end of 2025, Woods will be eligible to play on the PGA Tour Champions in 2026. For now, however, he needs just one more victory on the PGA Tour to set a new record with 83 wins, as he currently shares the record of 82 wins with the late great Sam Snead.
