Toni Nadal is of the opinion that a highly effective doubles team could be formed by his nephew, Rafael Nadal, and Carlos Alcaraz at the Olympics.
There has been a lot of debate on the social media platforms about the possibility of two playing together at the mega-event in 2024.
Toni was recently quoted in a report where he suggested the two can play together, granting that both are fit enough.
“If Rafael is in good condition, then I think they would be a very good pair,” he said. “I assume that Carlos is in good condition, so we’ll see. Let’s see if there is a possibility of winning an Olympic gold in singles or doubles.”
In May earlier this year, Alcaraz also suggested that he will be more than happy to team up with the former world number one but also stated that the two never had any discussion about it.
“Let’s see how he’s doing and how he’s going, you know, in this year,” he said. “Hopefully, he’s going great. But yeah, for me, it could be a dream to play doubles with him.”
Nadal is currently spending time on the sidelines as he continues his recovery from a knee injury. It was because of this reason he ended up missing three out of four Grand Slams in 2023.
Nadal only participated in the Australian Open but his journey came to an end in the second round as he suffered a surprising defeat to America’s Mackenzie McDonald in straight set with a score of 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.
On the other hand, Alcaraz has had an impressive year at the highest level. He was the only player in 2023 to win a Grand Slam other than Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz defeated the current world number one in a memorably five-set thrilling final at Wimbledon with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
