World No.3 Coco Gauff continues her preparations for next month’s Roland-Garros and the coming Olympic Summer Games Paris 2024 over the next two weeks at the Madrid Open, a WTA 1000-level event.
The 2023 US Open tennis champion received a first-round bye and will meet Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands in round two. Rus, the world No.47, beat Brenda Fruhvirtova 7-5 6-3 in the first round on Tuesday (23 April).
Gauff and Rus are expected to meet on Thursday (25 April) at a to-be-determined time. It’s the first meeting between the 20-year-old American and Rus, who is 33.
Gauff is coming off of a quarter-final effort last week in Stuttgart, though she fell in a topsy-turvy affair with eventual finallist Marta Kostyuk in a third-set tiebreak there.
Gauff is in the top half of the women’s draw with world No.1 Iga Swiatek, who marks 100 weeks at the top spot in Madrid. She could face Australian Open semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska in round three, with Madison Keys, Jelena Ostapenko, and 2022 Madrid champion Ons Jabeur all looming in later rounds.
