Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson may be 54 years old, but the golf talent that helped him win three of the four majors has not left him. He showed this off at LIV Greenbrier, one of the final events of the 2024 season, with an unbelievable shot.

Mickelson landed in a tough lie, with his golf ball resting on a hill of thick grass off the fairway. Not only was it difficult to even see the ball, but it was hard to get a club on it. Mickelson is left-handed, which meant he had to approach the shot from outside the dip and up high rather than below or level with it from the other side.

That didn’t stop the legendary golfer, who calmly squatted down and lobbed the ball towards the green. It left Mickelson with a very makeable putt, but the simple fact that he even got a good swing on it was impressive. Check out the result below.

The third round at Greenbrier is underway, and it’s shots like the one above that have helped Phil Mickelson break even. Through 15 holes today, Mickelson is at 1 under for the tournament, and he is tied for 49th as a result. He’s not going to catch Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka, the current leaders at 15 under, but he is staying away from an over-par showing.

Phil Mickelson discusses future with LIV Golf
Though he clearly still has the talent, Phil Mickelson understands that he is 54 and his days of competing, even on a reduced schedule with LIV Golf, are not innumerable. He’s going to retire at some point, but his involvement won’t stop there.

“My involvement with the HyFlyers is going to be long-term and probably through the rest of my life. I’m an equity shareholder and I’ll have the ability to be intricately involved in the growing out of the team throughout the course of the next many decades. But as far as my career, I’m realistic with where I’m at.”

He admitted that he’s been lucky to remain healthy and in shape at his age, allowing him to continue competing at a time when most have retired or at least moved to the PGA Tour Champions. He added:

“I see glimpses and my teammates see glimpses of me being where I expect to be able to compete at this level, but I’m also realistic with myself, and if I’m not able to I’ll step aside and let somebody come on in and take the HyFlyers to new levels.”

Phil Mickelson loves his LIV team, but he’s not above moving aside when he can’t keep up with them in the future.
