Team principal Toto Wolff has expressed his unequivocal desire to see Max Verstappen at Mercedes as the replacement for Lewis Hamilton next season.
Wolff emphasised that this transition “needs to happen at a certain stage,” signalling a strategic shift in the team’s driver lineup.

The seat opening at Mercedes comes as Lewis Hamilton announced his departure from the team to join Ferrari, leaving a crucial position to be filled for the 2025 Formula One season.

While several names have been floated as potential candidates for the vacant seat, including rising talents and seasoned veterans, it’s Max Verstappen who stands out as Wolff’s top choice.

Despite being under contract with Red Bull Racing until the end of 2028, Verstappen’s potential move to Mercedes remains a tantalising prospect.

The ongoing turmoil within Red Bull Racing, particularly involving team principal Christian Horner, has added fuel to speculation about Verstappen’s future.

Internal tensions, highlighted by friction between Jos Verstappen (Max’s father) and Horner, have cast doubts on the stability of the team.

Moreover, the fate of Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, appears to hinge on the decisions surrounding the reigning world champion.

Wolff addressed Mercedes’ strategic planning during an interview with Australia’s Fox Sports in Melbourne, underlining the importance of securing a competitive driver lineup for the 2025 season and beyond.
“It’s the kind of relationship that needs to happen at a certain stage. But we don’t know when,” Wolff said when asked about Verstappen.

Asked whether the Dutchman is his first choice, Wolff added: “Yes, I mean, you see what his performance levels are. But I wouldn’t want to discount the other ones too.

“I think we’ve got to look at ourselves and [ask] what is it we can do with this car. Then it becomes much easier, whoever drives the second car, it’s become much easier for George [Russell] because he has the potential of being a World Champion and so much more.

“It’s the team’s problem to solve really, rather than looking for a silver bullet with an amazing driver.”
