ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – As seen each winter, Spenard is a raven’s paradise.

But one bird is missing — the famous white raven.

The white raven was last spotted in April in the Spenard neighborhood, according to most reports sighting the bird.

Since the first sighting last October, over 27,000 members have joined the Anchorage White Raven Spottings group on Facebook.

Photographer and white raven superfan Brooke Williams is one of them.

She says the white raven “brought unity in the community.”

Ravens have made their way to town for the winter, but the white raven is nowhere to be found.

Rich Capitan, education director at the Alaska Zoo, explains,

“Right about now is when we — in theory — could and should be seeing her,” Capitan said. “It’s hard to say if she’ll come back.”

Perhaps the raven has made new raven friends, or has moved elsewhere. Capitan says it’s possible that the neighborhood simply wasn’t a good fit.

“Y’know, Spenard’s not for everyone. It’s a fun place, it really is, but maybe it wasn’t cut out for her,” he says.

For now, Williams and other birdwatchers continue to keep a lookout.

“Definitely holding out hope,” Williams says.
