Andy Murray has hinted he could bring the curtain down on his glistening Wimbledon career by playing doubles with brother Jamie Murray at next month’s Championships.
The Scot was dumped out of the French Open doubles this afternoon alongside Dan Evans to end a disappointing week at Roland Garros, where he lost in the singles first round on Sunday against old foe Stan Wawrinka.
Andy Murray will now adjust his focus to what is expected to be his final grass-court season – the two-time Wimbledon champion has said he is ‘unlikely to play on past this summer’ – though he could have one final pop at the Olympics back in Paris in late July.
But his Wimbledon swansong could end next to older brother Jamie. ‘My brother doesn’t have a partner for Wimbledon currently,’ he said yesterday after a 7-6, 7-6 defeat to Thiago Seyboth Wild and Sebastian Baez. ‘We have spoken a little bit about it. But not 100 per cent sure.
‘I mean obviously Jamie could also get a good partner, as well! We’ll see what happens, but we’ll probably decide in the next few days.’
The Murrays last played together in Washington in 2019 and before that at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Jamie has won seven doubles Grand Slams – five in the mixed – and this will be just the third time Andy has played duos at Wimbledon.
The pair won three of three Davis Cup matches together when Great Britain won in 2015.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist said that this disappointing defeat with Evans was a poor audition for this summer’s Games. ‘For both of us, it was kind of an opportunity to put our names in the frame to play the Olympics,’ added Murray.
‘(It was a) pretty strong doubles event this year, a lot of singles guys playing ahead of the Olympics. Me and Dan obviously were hoping to have a good run here. It wasn’t to be. So I don’t know if we’ll get the opportunity. There’s guys obviously ahead of us in the rankings.’
