Stan Wawrinka is one of the game’s most celebrated players in recent years and he believes there’s little comparison to be made between himself and Andy Murray
Stanislas Wawrinka has claimed there is no comparison to be made between him and Andy Murray, with the Swiss veteran insisting the Scot is levels above him. Wawrinka managed to win three Grand Slam titles in an era dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Murray was also a persistent threat to Wawrinka with the pair facing off 23 times.
While Wawrinka has won three Grand Slam tournaments, the same number as Murray, the humble Swiss believes that the similarities end there. The 40-year-old, who is still playing on the ATP Tour, has now pointed to the stats, insisting Murray has achieved much more in his career. “Those who know tennis know that there’s no possible comparison,” Wawrinka told Eurosport.”Yes, we have the same number of Grand Slam titles.
“But I think he has eight more finals, he must have 14 Masters 1000 or something like that, 45 tournaments won, world number one, he was top three for 10 years, 12 years… There is no possible comparison, really. It’s not to put me down, it’s just the reality. It doesn’t mean that I put myself below.”
Despite his unassuming remarks, Wawrinka won the Australian Open in 2014. This was followed by a victory at Roland Garros a year later. He beat Djokovic in the US Open final in 2016.
He also reached a career high of world No 3 in 2014. Yet his overall haul of 16 singles titles falls short of Murray’s career haul, which included 46 singles titles.
This included the US Open and Wimbledon twice. He won 14 Masters 1000 series, two Olympic Gold medals, and a title at the ATP Finals. He was also world No 1 for 41 weeks in 2016.
Murray also just tipped their head-to-head battles, winning 13 compared to Wawrinka’s ten. Yet for all his humility, Wawrinka did reveal that he always thought he had the Scot’s number when they went toe-to-toe.
