Carlos Alcaraz admits entering Wimbledon as the world No 1 and the top-seeded player probably isn’t changing much as Novak Djokovic still remains the No 1 favorite for the title at The Championships. On Sunday, Alcaraz ousted Alex de Minaur 6-4 6-4 in the Queen’s final to lift his first grass title and overall his 11th ATP title.
By winning Queen’s, Alcaraz also secured overtaking Djokovic at the world No 1 spot on Monday. When asked how much being ranked No 1 means for his Wimbledon chances, Alcaraz gave a very honest answer. “The chances are not so much.
Novak is coming to Wimbledon. Right now I’m feeling better than at the beginning of the week. No 1 before Wimbledon gives you some motivation and extra confidence for me to win Wimbledon. Doesn’t change too much whether I play Wimbledon No 1 or No 2,” Alcaraz said, via Sportskeeda.
Alcaraz makes his first grass breakthrough
Before the start of the grass season, Alcaraz admitted he still needed to learn about playing on grass. In Queen’s, Alcaraz positively surprised himself with the level he was able to show.
“It means a lot to me. Being able to win this amazing tournament in my first time that I played here for me is fantastic. To know that I’m (capable of) a good level on grass, obviously (to be) champion of every tournament feels special,” Alcaraz said.
This week, Alcaraz won’t be competing in any ATP events. However, Alcaraz is scheduled to take part in the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic – an exhibition that is taking place at the Hurlingham Club. After playing a match or two at the Hurlingham Club, Alcarau will kick off his third Wimbledon run.
In his first two Wimbledon appearances, Alcaraz suffered a first-round defeat in 2021 before making the round-of-16 last year. Now that Alcaraz has a grass title in his collection, his confidence is seemingly much bigger and he will be looking to make a strong Wimbledon run.
