KUNIA (HawaiiNewsNow) – Affordable rental housing in Kunia Village is being upgraded for families of current and retired agricultural workers.

The Nareit Foundation is awarding a $127,000 grant to nonprofit Kunia Village Development.

The grant will be used to replace outdated electrical systems and wiring in up to 30 homes.

Upgrades were urgently needed to bring electrical systems up to code and current standards.

The upgrades also minimize fire risk as old, malfunctioning, and exposed protective coverings were stripped away making the houses currently uninhabitable.

Many of the homes were built more than 80 years ago.

The plantation-style homes, which range in size from one-bedroom to four-bedroom units, are used by agricultural workers, their families and retirees of the former Del Monte plantation.
