World number one Novak Djokovic celebrated the start of the new year with victory at the United Cup in Perth, Australia on Sunday as Serbia defeated China 2-1.
Djokovic led Serbia to a 1-0 lead against China with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Zhang Zhizhen. The Chinese side equalized as Zheng Qinwen defeated Olga Danilovic 6-4, 6-2, but Serbia won the matchup with a 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 victory in the doubles.
Novak Djokovic and his team-mates made the countdown to 2024 on court and celebrated the start of the new year together.
“Since it is only three or four minutes [until midnight], how about we celebrate the new year together?” Djokovic asked the crowd.
“Stay a few minutes, we have a DJ who is going to play some music and we can do a countdown in a few minutes and celebrate together,” he said.
