Get your pumpkin fix with the return of DiAnoia’s Gnocchi Pumpkin Bowl. The fan-favorite dish features house-made gnocchi, pumpkin sauce, mozzarella, basil, and nutmeg served in a locally sourced roasted pumpkin. The Gnocchi Pumpkin Bowl is available for dine-in or takeout ($38) on the Eatery’s dinner menu, with reservations encouraged, or available as a takeout kit at DiAnoia’s sister shop, Pane è Pronto. City Works shakes up its rotating Chef Selects menu with four new fall dishes and drinks. Selections include Smoked Brisket Reuben Egg Rolls (smoked brisket, bacon-braised sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese wrapped in a fried wonton), and an Oktoberfest Burger (a beef patty, smoked provolone, beer-braised onions, sliced sausage, bacon, braised sauerkraut, and cider ale mustard on a pretzel bun). Try the “Jam”aretto Sour, a spin on the classic cocktail with raspberry and blueberry syrup, and AperFall Spritz, mixed with Aperol, dry cider, cranberry juice, cinnamon, and sparkling wine. Already thinking about Christmas? The City of Pittsburgh’s Office of Special Events opened registration for its 23rd Annual Gingerbread Display and Competition. Bakers, including children, families, school groups, nonprofits, and culinary professionals, can enter a gingerbread house for the “treasured holiday tradition” at the City-County Building. Last year’s winners included a gingerbread Ferris wheel and a re-creation of Page’s Dairy Mart. Registration is open through Sun., Nov. 9.

Meijer

Meijer, the Michigan-based big box grocer, confirmed that it’s expanding into Western Pennsylvania. A spokesperson told TribLive that the chain, known for converting vacant department store spaces, is buying properties in the region, adding to the local “grocery wars.” Meijer recently expanded to Northeast Ohio and operates more than 500 stores across the Midwest, half of which are supercenters comparable to Walmart.
The Meijer announcement follows Wegman’s upcoming expansion to Cranberry, and Giant Eagle’s recent move to lower grocery prices and upgrade stores.
